    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! Well... We get a two day break in the World Cup, with only 8 teams left. Too bad, the U.S. team isn't one of the 'great 8'! But that's what happens when you play the games, eh?

    The games people play now... Every night and every day now... Never meaning what they say now... Never saying what they mean...

    Yes, Joe South had it completely correct back in the 60's... I was watching a video of an interview with the famous, Jim Rogers, last night. And Jim was talking about the reason why Fed Chairman Big Ben Bernanke fought the 'audit the Fed' bill... And Jim said that Big Ben fought it because, he and the Fed Heads (my description), have spent trillions of dollars on complete junk paper, and he didn't want us (the taxpayers) to know what he had done. Ahhh... The games people play now......

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! I hit the "wall" yesterday about 2 o'clock... All the fun and sun of the weekend, became the wall, and I hit it square on! But I'm well rested now, so here we go!

    Front and Center this morning... Gold has reached a new all-time high this morning. Yesterday I kept watching the shiny metal tick higher and higher, and I would yell out across the desk each rise in Gold... Gold was $1,250 when I turned on the screens this morning. It has given back $2 since, as I did some reading and research, but Shoot Rudy, the move yesterday was something to admire!...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! The rain stopped, the sun came out, I got to sit outside and listen to the ballgame on the radio, all was right in Chuck's world again yesterday... The rain is supposed to come back tonight though... UGH! My little river town is watching the river rise to the top of the banks now...

    The hit songs just keep coming for the euro... As often as the Beatles put them out from 1963 to 1970, or Elton John put them out in the 70's...

    Well... It's the same for the euro... Just when it looked as though the euro might survive a day without being taken to the woodshed... The Eurozone officials just couldn't stand the prosperity! ( and I use that word loosely!) German Chancellor Angela Merkel made some proposals to gain control over 'destructive' financial markets... Her first move was to place a ban on naked short-selling......

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you... Today marks 1-week since I've been back writing the Pfennig... I simply love writing the Pfennig each day, and boy did I miss it when I was unable to write... Vacation is one thing, those are well deserved breaks, but to not be able to write is another. So... I'm thankful that I'm able to write again...

    Well... The euro went into a tailspin yesterday, and for once it wasn't Greece so much... This time it was a little Greece, and a lot Portugal. The ratings agencies downgraded Greek debt to junk... And they downgraded Portugal's debt from A- to A-2, with a negative outlook. The fear that Greek's debt problems would spread, is coming to fruition... The euro fell to a 1-year low during the day, and the selling didn't stop in the U.S!...

    Good day, we had another strong day for the dollar yesterday, with the greenback gaining against all of the majors. But overnight, the Asians and then the Europeans sold the dollar and moved money back into the currencies. So after another rollercoaster ride, we are basically right back where we were at this time yesterday morning. These volatile markets are likely to continue, as investors try to figure out if the global economy will recover or if we will slide back into recession. With all of this uncertainty, you would think investors would be moving into 'hard assets': Gold and Silver. But the markets for these two precious metals have been surprisingly quiet this year. More on the metals a bit later, first I will try to figure out these currency markets....
  • Germany Weighs Possible Bail Out...

    In This Issue..

    * Some healing in the currencies...
    * Brazilian real heats up!
    * Is there a secret central bankers meeting?
    * Aussie Confidence weakens...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! It sure turned out to be a Terrific Tuesday yesterday, even with 5 inches of snow on the ground! There are rumors going round that someone's underground, and she will rock you, no wait, the rumors are... 1. There is a secret central bank meeting going on, and 2. that Germany is weighing bailout possibilities for Greece...

    The latter really lit a fire under the risk assets yesterday, allowing stocks, currencies and commodities to enjoy a day in the sun, away from the shade the dollar was casting on the risk assets. Stocks turned around and had a strong showing for the day, Gold was up $15, and currencies, led by the Brazilian real gained back some precious ground VS the dollar. I know that sounded a little strange saying 'led by the Brazilian real' as I normally associate the currencies being 'led by the euro'......

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! As I understand it, we are in for some Monsoon like rain today and the next couple of days... Living in a little river town, and having a creek at the back of my property, lends itself to cause me to worry when I hear things like Monsoon like rains expected... But... It's mother nature, I can't do a thing to stop it, so, I carry on... But worrying while I carry on!

    The rain is falling on the currencies too... The dollar has rebounded very quickly the past few days, and there are no roadblocks right now. The risk takers in the markets are running for safety again, sent running by China's decision to curb lending and attempt to slow growth before their economy overheats......
  • Green Light, Green Light!

    In This Issue..

    * FOMC minutes make it a Risk On Day!
    * Gold hits $1,180!
    * Germany's ZEW is bang on with their forecast!
    * Russia to buy loonies?

    It's a Risk On Day, full on, no 'kind of' today! Or at least that's how it looks as I begin to write this morning... The Big Dog, euro, is back over 1.50 this morning, and Gold is trading at $1,177! What brought about this full on Risk On day?

    Well... It was the Fed's FOMC meeting minutes... And, when I read what the Fed Heads had to say, I had one song in my mind... Hey! You! Get off of my cloud! Because that's where their collective heads are with these minutes, folks... The Fed Heads viewed the U.S. economy on firmer footing and expects the growth to continue in the 4th QTR... Yeah, right, and I've got some swamp land I'd like to sell you! Snake Oil salesmen these guys!

    Any way... The Fed Heads also said that the dollar's depreciation had been 'orderly'... With no mention of doing anything to stop the depreciation! Green light, Green light, Green light... How many of these Green lights do traders and you need to realize that the Fed isn't going to stop the dollar's decline? And How about the Treasury? Oh! That's right, they're too busy shoving negative yields down people's throats! OK, I'm getting all ticked off, and I really don't feel like doing that today, so I'm going to talk about something else, fast!...

    * Germany's IFO hits a 15-month high!
    * Even the NY Times talks about deficit spending!

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! A Risk 'kind of' On Day... Which I believe will be difficult to hold on to as we draw closer to Thursday. The volume will dry up, like I said yesterday like using a Sham Wow (Vince where are you?) and... There will be all kinds of position squaring ahead of Thursday, for many traders, including yours truly, will be making this a 4-day holiday weekend, and good traders do NOT leave themselves out on a line with open trades before leaving for 4 days!...

    * EX-CBO Director talks about the deficit...

    Good day... And a Marvelous Monday to you! It's Thanksgiving Week! I know I mentioned it was on the horizon about 10 days ago, but now the week is here! I don't know what your plans are for Thanksgiving, but I hope they include giving Thanks for the men and women of the armed forces... You may not agree with their mission, but supporting them with good thoughts shouldn't enter the equation...

    OK... On Friday morning, it was a Risk Off day... But as the day wore on, Risk came back into the currencies.... And today, it's REALLY a Risk On day! Apparently, at some time on Friday, some one with a lick of brains, realized that the Fed is going to keep their stimulus measures, which include near zero interest rates, for some time to come... Why would that deep six the dollar? Ahhh grasshopper, apparently you haven't been paying attention in class! No worries... Here's the skinny...

  • Germany & France Post 3rd QTR Growth...

    In This Issue..

    * Risk Aversion fuels dollar rally yesterday...
    * Eurozone growth may stop the Risk Aversion...
    * Budget Deficit is a record $176.4 Billion!
    * Euro, Swiss, Aussie, Norway, all cheaper today!

    Good day... And a Happy Friday to one and all! Let's try to make this a Fantastico Friday as well! The Risk Aversion that was creeping into the currency markets yesterday really took hold in the U.S. trading session, which meant the dollar was being bought once more, along with Japanese yen...

    It just makes me laugh out loud, when I write that the 'safe haven currencies' during Risk Aversion trading are the dollar and yen... These two countries have debt up to their eyeballs, pay no interest on their deposits, and have a leadership deficiency... (ok, before every begins to think that I'm ripping the president again, I'm not... I'm talking about the Central Bank, and lawmakers of each country)...
  • German Business Confidence Slides...

    In This Issue..

    * Currencies trade in a tight range...
    * $81 Billion in Treasury auctions this week!
    * Fitch fans the flames of a fire in the U.K....
    * Aussie Business Confidence rises...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! I didn't start out this Tuesday on the right foot, and now I'm really running late! Oh well...

    The non-dollar currencies didn't move much yesterday, the euro bumped up and down against the 1.50 figure, while the A$ did the same against 93-cents, and Swiss against parity... So the currencies are trading in the same clothes they went to bed in last night!

    The Big Dog, euro, did attempt to move stronger into the 1.50 level, but that move was thwarted by a poor reading of German Investor Confidence this morning. German Investor Confidence as measured by the think tank ZEW, reported that their index had fallen to 51.1 this month VS the 56 in October. Most of those Germans surveyed said that they expect the economic recovery to be slow once the Gov't removes the stimulus in the economy. So... Previous euphoria is being replaced by realism... But that's OK... Better to have a reality grip on things than to go around thinking that everything is seashells and balloons......

    * Trichet to defend the dollar today?
    * Central Banks are diversifying...

    Good day... And a Thunderin' Thursday to you! It's raining here in St. Louis, so, it must be Thursday! It's a big night for yours truly, but I'll talk about that at the end... We've got some big moves going on in the currencies and metals, so we had better get to it, and save the chit-chat for later, eh? But first, today is the funding deadline on our latest BRIC MarketSafe CD... We'll have one more in November and then that's it!

    OK, front and center this morning, Gold has soared to another all-time high! When I turned on the screen this morning, Gold was flashing a great big $1,055 figure... WOW! But wait! OK, now that sounded like an infomercial... But wait! If you act now, you can get double the Ginsu knives! HA! OK, getting back to the original, but wait... Gold and Silver for that matter, aren't the only risk assets moving higher this morning... All 16 of the countries that are deemed to be the biggest U.S. trading partners, have currencies that are taking liberties VS the dollar this morning......
