    * ECB and UK rate decisions...
    * China to stress test banks...
    * Happy Birthday Delaney Grace!!...

    Good day... Thunderstorms are rolling through the St. Louis area this morning, and while we don't need the rain, the cooler temperatures they are bringing with them are certainly welcome.

    The dollar moved a bit higher yesterday as data released here in the US finally contained some positive news for US workers. The ISM's index of non-manufacturing businesses rose to 54.3 in July from last month's 53.8 figure. And more importantly for market psyche, it was well above expectations which had predicted a drop to 53. About 90 percent of the US economy is service related, so this number is more closely watched than the manufacturing reports....
  • Eurozone Confidence Rises...

    * Currencies rally
    * German unemployment drops...
    * RBNZ hikes rates 25 BPS...
    * CBO & the inconvenient debt...

    Good day... And a Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! They figured it out! Finally! And in time I might add, given we hook our camper up to my vehicle on Sunday! In the end... The guy at the auto shop said, 'if we would have only listened to what you were telling us'... I said, 'yes, eventually, everyone realizes that!' HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    OK... Front and Center this morning, I have to tell you that we've had a HUGE currency rally overnight, and the rally still has legs through the European session, for, I've seen the euro inch higher as I booted up my computer! What's got the currencies, led by the Big Dog, euro, so wound up this morning? Ahhh grasshopper... Come, sit, and let me tell you the story of an ancient warrior, no wait, let me tell you about the rally!...

    * Currencies range trade
    * Aussie CPI prints soft...
    * RBNZ to hike rates tonight...
    * Oil drop pushes loonies lower...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! I'm writing from home again this morning, as I have to deal with my car again. They told me it was fixed, I drove it about 10 miles to find out it wasn't! UGH! I must have the guy that failed 'car repairs' 10 times before passing...

    OK... The currency action yesterday was, while range traded, up and down, and all around. Yesterday morning I told you that the euro had broken above 1.30, and I would check it to see how long it remained there... Well, this time it was more than 10 minutes, and the euro rose to 1.3040... But then the rug was pulled from under the single unit, and it was back below 1.30 it went... In fact, it fell to just above 1.29, before then turning around once again and heading higher, eventually ending the day at 1.30....

    * BOE called out for quantitative easing...
    * Indian Rupee to shine...
    * China loosens grip on Hong Kong deposits...

    Good day. We had some pretty unsettled weather come through the area yesterday and last night, with the lightening and thunder producing quite a show. The currency markets, on the other hand, were quite stable. The biggest gainer was the Yen, and the largest loser the Euro; but neither moved more than .65% vs. the US$. Tight ranges across the board for the currency markets....

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! Did you have a grand Independence Day Holiday Weekend? I sure did! I got to see two ballgames, one very bad, one good. Spend time with the kids, friends, and relax a little... WOW! Now that I think of it, the weekend was more grand than I first thought!

    The currencies traded yesterday, but in very tight ranges, as the U.S. was on holiday. This morning, the bias is to sell dollars, much like it was on Friday before the liquidity of Europe went to the pubs... Let's go back now, and revisit Friday's action...

    Well... More proof that the double dip is coming on Friday......
  • ‘For Much Longer’...

    In This Issue..

    * Aussie PM resigns!
    * Aussie mining tax is dead!
    * New Home Sales plummet 33%!
    * Fed is not so "cocky" any longer...

    Good day... And a Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! It's Tub Thumpin' because of some good, no great news from Australia overnight! It certainly isn't because of the Housing data that printed yesterday! And the Fed isn't so 'cocky' about the economy suddenly... Hmmm... These things and more, as we explore our Tub Thumpin' Thursday, so let's go!

    Front and Center this morning, Julia Gillard became Australia's first female prime minister after Kevin Rudd stepped aside as leader of the governing Labor Party, paving the way for the government to drop a controversial new 40% levy on mining profits that has damaged its standing in voter polls.

    * High yielders underperform...
    * Franc at all-time high VS euro...
    * Gold gets back on rally tracks...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! It's also a BIG DAY for the U.S. Men's soccer team... Yes, I know they call it football in all corners of the world but here... Our Soccer legend, Ty Keough, calls the U.S. version of football, 'the gridiron'! Any way, it's a Big Day for the Men's team... Win and they are assured of moving on.

    Yesterday, after the currencies had sold off in the overnight sessions, they traded throughout the U.S. session in a tight range, with a bias to move higher, but not being able to mount any kind of sustained move against the dollar....
  • Brazil Hikes Rates Again!

    In This Issue..

    * Currency rally holds on to gains...
    * Rate hikes begin to add up...
    * Trade & Budget Deficit monsters...
    * Canada posts a trade surplus!

    Good day... And a Happy Friday to one and all! Let's go on record right out of the starters' blocks this morning, and say this will be a Fantastico Friday, eh?

    Well... What a rally in the risk assets yesterday! And for once, when the rally fizzled out yesterday afternoon, profits weren't taken in the overnight markets... Instead we saw a consolidation, if you will, of the price gains on Thursday in the overnight markets. That's nice to see, eh? For it had been the pattern of recent times to just sell off any gains, and end up back on square one, or even lower than the starting level. So, like I said, this was very nice to see... I checked the levels last night before I went to bed, and noticed that there had not been any sell off, and thought, what a great Friday it would be tomorrow, if these can hold throughout the night... And they did!...
  • A Vote Of Confidence!

    In This Issue..

    * China boosts euros...
    * Chinese exports soar!
    * RBNZ hikes rates!
    * Bernanke on the "hill"!

    Good day... And a Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! Well, we have a new Stanley Cup Champion, and plenty more to talk about today! The Mid-West has been in one of those weather patterns that sees the day heat up, then produce violent storms, and then clears up... Sometimes it seems as though this lasts forever!

    OK... Well, Front and Center this morning, the euro is pushing higher on some words from Asia... Seems that China is very much behind the euro, and made statements related to that thought, which really put some starch in the euro's shorts overnight. The thing I worry about right now, is the European Central Bank (ECB) meeting that's going on as I type my fat fingers to the bone... The ECB could crush this mini-rally in the euro in a heartbeat by saying the 'wrong thing' at their press conference that will be held after the ECB announces that rates will remain unchanged.

    * Another glut of Treasuries to auction...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! I had a first today on the way to work... I hit every green light! Now... I'm sure you are wondering why I would even have green lights at this hour of the morning... Me too! But they are there! And it was smooth sailing into work today... YAHOO!

    OK... Let's get serious, serious... The currencies traded in a tight range yesterday, with a brief mini-rally in euros, as the single unit rallied to 1.20, but that was short-lived. The rumor going around was that the Swiss National Bank (SNB) was intervening...

  • Risk Aversion Is Back!

    * Euro bashing is back!
    * Canadian GDP jumps to 6.1%!
    * RBA keeps rates unchanged
    * 7-U.S. cities have 'junk debt'...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! And welcome to June! As Pfennig tradition would have it... June is busting out all over, all over the meadows and the hill! Buds're bustin' outta bushes, And the rompin' river pushes, Ev'ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill! And you thought I was just a 'rock-n-roller!'

    Well... Yesterday while we were honoring the fallen soldiers of today and yesteryear, the Europeans were knocking the stuffing out of the euro once again... This time, it was a story that spread like wildfire regarding the Eurozone economy not being able to have strong growth, because of all their austerity measures... Now... Come on boys! First you slam the euro's fingers in the door (OUCH!) for not cutting deficit spending in a few countries, and when they do show a willingness to cut deficit spending, you the ruler out and smack the euro right across the wrist!

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! Thanks for all the 'Welcome Back' notes and e-mails yesterday... It helped make the day rush by in a heartbeat! Before I knew it, I was yawning, and getting tired, so... Out the door I went! But all-in-all, it was good to be back in the saddle, and to see all my colleagues here at EverBank again.

    Well... Front and Center this morning, is the fact that the NY boys and girls didn't like the Greek Bailout one iota yesterday, sending the single unit below 1.32... When the traders in Asia and London returned last night and this morning, they too did not like what they saw and sent the euro even lower......

    * Interest rate differentials are back in play!
    * RBNZ keeps rates unchanged...

    Good day...And a Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! What a great evening of jazz music last night, with my little buddy having two guitar solos in two of the 4 songs played...

    Well... No amount of soothing words from Germany was going to stop the tailspin of the euro yesterday, after S&P downgraded Spain's debt now... It's a European debt pandemic according to the people selling the euro like funnel cakes at a State Fair.

    The Euro states have to feel like they are getting treated like a red headed stepchild... (Ok, it's just a saying folks) by the ratings agencies... The PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain) are falling like dominoes that were all lined up......
